The Oklahoma State Cowboys have ostensibly been crushed by the portal but Gundy is quietly reordering the team to play the modern game. Can he succeed?
IAN….let me see if I’ve got this right… 1. Be careful to not count Gundy out to quickly….2. Ways to attack the Flyover D are finally starting to surface, the key of which seems to be how you occupy the all important N (middle safety who triggers fast)!
In my time as a Poke: Jim Stanley, Jimmy Johnson, Pat Jones, Bob Simmons, Les "I Like Pretty Girls" Miles, and now Mike Gundy. Except for HCMG, all were either fired or used Oklahoma State as a stepping stone. Mike has created a stable, compliant, winning culture, which is appreciated by many of us old timers. He seems to figure things out most of the time.
He does appear to go for broke on assistants, sometimes winning (Knowles) and sometimes not ( Gleason). Two current assistants Cowboy fans discuss a lot are Coach Dickey and Coach Dunn. You provided your take on Dickey. Any thoughts on Dunn?
As I understand it, Dunn is well regarded for something or another he offers. A creative mind, recruiting, reaching players, I don’t know what in particular.
They’ve not been great with Dunn but they’ve also not had good lines so…chicken or the egg?
I don’t think they’ve ever had it as good as they did with Joe Wickline before Charlie Strong poached him and then wasted him. Wickline was also a poor fit for Texas but I digress.
What I hear: Dunn: Lots of folks were surprised and dismayed he got another year. Many think OC may be a bridge too far for him. Dickey: Great at KSU, but best days are behind him. Let him "retire" in dignity.
What I think: Dickey hasn't been allowed to do what he does best. Ian's analysis makes me think this might be a year his line does better. I hope so. Great human being. Dunn is a super recruiter and receivers coach. As OC and play caller, seems to have great games and games where I wish he was stuck on the elevator (OR State game in Corvallis). Personally I like the guy and he fits the culture.
That's why we're here my Longhorn friend. So much better than the screaming forums.

Dave….I’m a UT guy, but I really like to hear what knowledgeable folks (like yourself) from other schools have to say!
Dickey might be past his prime but they also might just need to expand their approach and, more importantly, not be gutted by injuries again.
