One of the early points I made on this website when I started it up a couple years ago was that spread passing is the ultimate trump card in college football.

Every year or so you get a team that has all the right pieces to put together a truly nasty passing attack. The veteran quarterback who can make quick decisions and perhaps move around, the veteran wideouts with pro potential, and the O-line that can protect well enough as a unit to make it all work.

In 2023 it was Washington, in 2022 we didn’t exactly have a passing game like that but Ohio State was the closest. Alabama had it in 2021 but lost their two wideouts in the SEC Championship Game and then in the National Championship Game. In 2019 we had the ultimate version of this squad in the LSU Tigers.

It may be a while before we see another squad that potent.

However, in 2024 I think we’ll have one team of this variety who’s likely to be in the playoffs. The Miami Hurricanes.

Do I think the Canes can win the National Championship? That’d be tough. The defense is ranked 51st in defensive FEI and the squad is experiencing a fair degree of difficulty navigating a modest schedule. The Canes are not favorites to win multiple tough games in a row.

These highly potent passing attacks don’t always win the title. I do know one thing though, this is the last team you want to face in an elimination game.
