Where are the "lesser" athletes going?
With multiple programs putting a major onus on recruiting pure athletes, where are the pure football players going?
Every few months or so I get a call I’m always eager to take. Kevin Flaherty of 247, the biggest Kansas football enthusiast in the world and former Texas beat writer, will give me a ring and what ensues will invariably be a long, fascinating conversation on something to do with recruiting strategy and how to recognize winning athleticism in sports prospects.
We’ll also talk some Kansas football, which is mercifully becoming a more interesting topic these days.
I missed the call initially this time, but managed to pull away to do the dishes and plug in the AirPods for what I knew would be another interesting, albeit unquestionably Jayhawks-heavy, conversation.
Kevin: I’ve got a philosophical question for you.
Me: Shoot.
Kevin: It feels like every program in the country has their recruiting departments scouring the country for kids with impressive measurables. Track times, size, what haveyou. Where are all the kids going who aren’t freak athletes but are just plain, good football players?
Me: Hmmm…Iowa State?
