Thoughts on the quarterbacks taken in the 2025 NFL Draft
What a strange year for quarterbacks in the draft.
Flag football could scarcely be going worse so today let’s talk about how the NFL reacted to the various quarterbacks available in the 2025 Draft.
My emerging theory for quarterback play in football is essentially this:
In high school you want one of your best overall athletes and football players at quarterback, if running a spread offense, because he’ll have the ball in his hands on every play and can thus dominate an entire game.
In college you just want the really smart distributor. Defenses go up several levels in athleticism, discipline, and complexity and the key at quarterback is having a guy who can get the ball to the right playmakers at the right times. If he can “hero-ball” it like a high school guy that’s great, but no one can do that every game without breaking down so it has to be an extra gear. You’re better off with your best football players at the skill positions and specifically outside receiver.
In the NFL, you need extremely intense skill and knowhow. It’s not just about getting the ball to the right guy at the right time, it’s doing so against much better defense and knowing how to do so based on your own reads rather than what your play-caller tells you with the call or in the headset. The amount of knowhow and skill it takes to find and hit the right guy is extremely intense. It’s more like high school where you want your best football player at quarterback again.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the guys selected.
