The Week 9 Watch
It's a "play for pride" week with several teams needing to show up to save their seasons.
This week is another big test of the Veer and Shoot offense, about which I’ve written a fair amount recently and will write more in the coming weeks. It’s an inescapable topic so long as Tennessee keeps winning.
They’re undefeated, have a massive game with Georgia coming up, and could be in the SEC Championship and potentially the playoffs if things keep up. Additionally, quarterback Hendon Hooker will be up for the Heisman Trophy, which has been won once before by a Veer and Shoot quarterback (2011, Robert Griffin III, now analyst and innuendo artist for ESPN).
The fact this is taking place at Tennessee, a long term woebegone blue blood who fell from National Championship heights under Phill Fullmer to a Texas-like wilderness trek, makes it an even more prominent story.
In the midst of all that, the offensive system is still not very well understood by fans, commentators, or apparently the defensive coaches asked to stop it.
So we’ll keep talking about it along with a few other games of interest.
