I’ve noticed there is a major theme developing for the 2024 season in the SEC in particular. As a Texas alumni the discussion of the Longhorns and Sooners joining the league has included a great deal of “get ready for big boy football in the trenches!”

It’s unquestionably the case that there are more big athletes with NFL futures in the SEC than in the Big 12, and Texas and Oklahoma’s (theoretical and actual) advantages in the Big 12 are going to dissipate some facing a different type of competition.

However, the story of the modern Southeastern conference and the 2024 season in particular are not that of “three yards and a cloud of dust” or loads of brawny teams settling outcomes with tests of pure physicality.

It’s of an increasingly spread-oriented league with explosive offenses headed by experienced quarterbacks everywhere you look. Teams are really going to score in the SEC this season and I imagine we’ll see a number of shootouts. Just in time for me to be an even more devoted follower of the league!

I’ll show you what I mean after the break…
