There is a budding rivalry in college football which will feature a contest late on Saturday night.
The Baylor Bears, an emerging power within the Big 12 Conference, are taking on the BYU Cougars who will be joining the league for the 2023 season.
We don’t have a nickname for it yet, but I personally like “the Dr Pepper Bowl.” Mormons don’t drink caffeine and Dr Pepper was created in Waco, you see. Baylor is a private, Baptist school while BYU is an institution in the Church of Latter Day Saints so there’s all kinds of fun contrasts between the fanbases.
Also fun, Dave Aranda poached BYU’s offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes and offensive line coach Eric Mateos to power their breakthrough 2021 season.
The Cougars came to Waco last year to play this fledgling series and got squashed 38-24. However, they just administered payback to Baylor’s 2021 starting quarterback Gerry Bohanon when they whipped his new school USF 50-21 and opened as three-point favorites over the Bears.
The 2022 Dr Pepper Bowl promises to be a fascinating matchup.
