It’s obviously not that hard to lose. Everyone is trying to win and competition is all around us. You can beat yourself or you can get beat, but to win you have to overcome your own weaknesses and the strengths of the opponent.

We’ve been very good at losing in flag football this season with our most recent game ending in a 36-21 defeat against the other bottom dwelling team in our league, named the 49ers.

Our kids were pretty optimistic going in, I told them that while we’d been eliminated from the Championship we had a chance to end the season with three consecutive wins and to avoid going out as losers. That chance was foiled early in the game when we quickly got down 26-2 before finding anything on offense or getting any stops on defense.

There’s nothing left for us this year except to learn the best possible lessons we can from the defeats. Also to win at least one freaking game, that’d be good too, but at this point you have to explore the redemptive value of defeat. Me and my son have already begun that exploration, hopefully we’ll have some positive takeaways for the future and look back at this season as a cornerstone for something better.
