Spring football roundups: Drama Station, TX
Texas A&M had a dramatic offseason and a traumatic regular season. Will it pay off in 2023 or continue?
Last season was an interesting test for Texas A&M.
The 2020 season was phenomenal, the Aggies went 9-1 behind a veteran O-line and quarterback and one of many good Mike Elko defenses in College Station. The 2021 season was a bit of a rebuild and they had to overcome losing the winner of the fall quarterback battle (Haynes King) when he was injured early in the season.
His replacement Zach Calzada is a contentious topic. I thought he was actually pretty good and certainly a big part of the reason for their win over Alabama. I even suggested their best quarterback had left and was boo’d vociferously. It’s hard to say who was right there as A&M tanked yet Calzada did nothing at his new school.
He hadn’t meshed well with Jimbo Fisher either and transferred out after the 8-4 season to initiate a wild offseason for the Aggies.
