Spring check-ins: Tennessee's transition
Josh Heupel and the Volunteers are starting to enter phase III of their plan, could it springboard them to the top of the SEC?
Josh Heupel’s Veer and Shoot offense has been invaluable for the Tennessee Volunteers. Here’s how things have progressed since they hired him to replace Jeremy Pruitt amidst the fallout of the scandal which took him down.
Insta-offense from the Veer and Shoot for the Vols with another significant leap in year two with the same quarterback and better supporting talent.
This is also about as effective a way as I can find to show how Joe Milton limited the offense in year four short of pulling up old clips of him missing open receivers. The Vols were also reduced in 2023 by another factor., Nick Saban actually game planned them half-decently. We’ll come back to that.
Now the Vols are entering a new phase of the Heupel era. The days of patching together offense with transfer quarterbacks has given way to the Nico Iamaleava era and Tennessee’s defense also seems to have a familiar plan in place which I reckon has a chance to produce results. I don’t think this will be “the year” for the Vols but it might be what we at Inside Texas often like to call “the year before the year.”
Here’s what needs to come together for Tennessee to have a chance at ruling from their Rocky Top.
