Ryan Day dunks on Lou Holtz to cap an exciting Week 4
This was one of the more WWE weeks of college football with multiple coaches playing it up for the media after big games.
Ryan “3rd base” Day made a phenomenal heel turn after Ohio State’s big road victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday night.
If you’re not familiar with the WWE and the language of its product, the “heel turn” is when an established character makes himself more interesting and reinvigorates his storylines by embracing the role of a villain after initially presenting as a hero. Treachery during a match is a great way to execute a heel turn, but what Day did was pretty great too.
Dan Lanning of the Oregon Ducks pulled off a more subtle maneuver. He gave the broadcast crew extra access so they could capture him telling his team that they were about “substance not clicks” and the game would be played on on “grass not in Hollywood.”
He kinda gave up the game though when he noted at halftime, “I hope all the people who have been watching the last few weeks are watching now.” Deion “Prime Time” Sanders’ amazing salesmanship of Colorado football, aided by the media who were always going to overhype matchups with high profile but rebuilding TCU and Nebraska, set up Oregon to make a big splash for a large audience by dominating a much weaker team. Lanning went all-in.
Meanwhile Lane Kiffin’s attempt to disrupt Alabama and set his own team up to get a win on the Tide went about like it normally does…poorly.
Let’s talk about some of the action.
