Alabama has come a long way since Nick Saban left, and that was only a year ago. The direction, at least publicly, has been of a downward nature.
The Kalen DeBoer era didn’t get off to a roaring start, which has clearly been held against him in one of the more unfair media narratives I’ve ever seen. Of course it was entirely predictable and I basically warned the man that replacing the greatest college football coach of all time wasn’t a great way to step up into a new, bigger job.
It might have been easier to win the National Championship in Washington than to do so in Alabama while trying to follow Saban’s act. However! There are reasons you leave Washington to come to Alabama and those reasons could materialize in 2025 with a run at the national championship.
Currently such a level of achievement doesn’t seem to be the expectation of Alabama from college football. I routinely see Alabama with top 15 rankings and Vegas odds placing them in the 10-15 range, but the AWG methods for team evaluation I use here says the Tide may have the strongest team in the country next year.
I’ll explain what I see and why I think those expectations may be selling the Tide short.
