National Signing Day summary
While the transfer portal and coaching silly season hog some headlines, National Signing Day is still the biggest offseason day in College Football.
The decision to move the transfer portal day to December for players to enter their name in, after already creating “early signing day” in late December, has made for a wild silly season in college football.
December is now the month where most teams hire and fire their coaches, sign the vast majority of their freshman players (many of whom are competing in the playoffs), and manage the inflow and outflow of the transfer portal. It’s totally insane, like if the NFL had the draft and free agency during the playoffs and the playoff teams were also the same ones having to pick in the top of the draft.
For all that, National Signing Day is still the most important day of the offseason. While teams can drastically change their rosters with the transfer portal now, there’s still no beating the steady accumulation of top talent in your freshmen classes. A signing day won’t say as much about the following season as the portal infusions, but it’ll say a lot more about the multiple future seasons beyond.
There have been a ton of interesting trends from this year’s signing day worth mentioning.
