Master class chess matches of 2022: Chris Klieman vs Sonny Dykes
Breaking down Sonny Dykes and Garrett Riley's TCU offense against Chris Klieman and Joe Klanderman's Kansas State defense for the Big 12 title.
In the late days of Football Study Hall when I was digging in the #content mines for new article ideas, I came up with the idea for a series called “Master class chess games.”
It was really simple in concept. I found high stakes games from the previous season that pitted top minds on opposite sides of the ball against each other and broke down the gameplans and strategies. Execution on these is a little tougher, but hopefully my loyal readers are rewarded by my labor.
Here were the ones I wrote up back then:
Gary Patterson’s TCU vs Urban Meyer/Ryan Day's Ohio State.
Joe Moorhead’s Mississippi State vs Kevin Steele’s Auburn.
Mike Leach’s Washington State vs Pete Kwiatkowski and Jimmy Lake’s Washington.
Mark Dantonio’s Michigan State vs Scott Frost’s Nebraska.
Dan Mullen’s Florida vs Dave Aranda’s LSU.
I don’t remember what the numbers were like on clicks but I learned an awful lot from the exercise. Now we’re going to repeat it for some of the more interesting games of 2022.
Feel free to fire away suggestions for potential matchups. Today we’re starting with the Big 12 Championship between Chris Klieman’s K-State defense and Sonny Dykes’ TCU offense.
