I felt tremendous validation this weekend watching Ole Miss absolutely take it to the LSU defense. Everything I warned about for the Bayou Bengals in their season opener against Clemson finally bore out against the Rebels in Oxford.

You cannot play a base 4-3 defense against a good spread team, particularly not one with a true dual-threat quarterback and tight end. They will hunt your non-nickel linebacker in space and punish everything your secondary does to try and overcompensate for lacking coverage skill in the wide side of the field.

On the other side of the emotional spectrum, it’s getting sad to watch Jackson Arnold play football. My fears about him out of Denton Guyer and going into Oklahoma where he had much too much early hype and expectations, are finishing him off now in Auburn where he should really be growing out of some of his issues as a third year player.

You can read about the 4-down Flyover on this very website by following this link. We’ll save the fate of my flag football squad, the Chicken Nuggets, embracing an identity as a ground and pound team in Week 1, for Wednesday. Like with nearly all of my flag football tales, it’s a tragicomedy so…if that’s your genre look forward to it.
