Could a mid-major win an expanded College Football Playoff?
College basketball is seeing increased parity, could an expanded playoff do the same for college football?
There was a great question I got in the mailbag I did a few weeks back for which I didn’t have a great answer yet.
Here was the actual text of the question:
If you had to guess what the competitive geography of FBS football looked like in 15 years in terms of 10-15 teams that are consistently vying for playoff wins and national titles, who would you pick? I think there’s a rotating list of 5-10 teams now that could reasonably win a title in the next 2-3 years, does that list get bigger with playoff expansion?
Obviously there are a million things to factor into this calculation. Which teams are stable at head coach? Which teams are utilizing NIL effectively and mitigating the risks associated with it? Then there’s the transfer portal, which can lead to a program’s depth chart being overhauled in a second. How do we factor that in?
Finally the last component, what impact will playoff expansion have?
In light of March Madness opening up this week, I figured it’d be a good time to talk about the expansion of the College Football Playoff and how that could impact who wins National Championships in the coming years.
