A legendary offensive coach who's been languishing in UCLA is the next offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes. What? How?
I’ve already written a fair bit about Ohio State this offseason, mostly this piece on their considerable investment into the 2024 season:
Yet even since then, things have been happening. Strange things.
First they lost Bill O’Brien. He had the chance to be head coach at Boston College, which for whatever reason he deemed to be a superior option (he is from there), and before he had even really settled in at Columbus he was gone.
So Ryan Day moved on to another option…Chip Kelly. The head coach of the UCLA Bruins.
If you want to build a coherent narrative about how X or Y trend in the college or NFL game is pushing coaches to make their decisions…you’re really up against it. There isn’t a single variable guiding these choices.
So anyways, now one of the great innovators of the college offense in the 21st century, is the new offensive coordinator of the Buckeyes. There’s a lot to dissect in this hire…
